The History of Tehri

Tehri, nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India, carries a rich and fascinating history. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word “Trihari,” meaning a place that cleanses three types of sins — of thought, word, and deed. Over the centuries, Tehri evolved from a spiritual retreat into a significant princely state.

Originally, the area was part of the larger Garhwal Kingdom. In the 19th century, after a devastating invasion by the Gorkhas of Nepal, the British East India Company intervened. Following the Anglo-Nepalese War and the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816, the British returned a part of Garhwal to its rightful king, Sudarshan Shah. It was then that Tehri was established as the capital of the newly formed princely state of Tehri Garhwal.

For generations, Tehri Garhwal was ruled by the Shah dynasty. The rulers maintained a semi-independent status under British suzerainty. Maharaja Narendra Shah, one of the notable rulers, played a significant role in the state’s modernization, initiating schools, hospitals, and roads.

After India gained independence in 1947, the Tehri princely state merged into the Indian Union in 1949. In recent times, Tehri gained global attention because of the Tehri Dam, one of the tallest dams in the world. Its construction led to the submergence of the old town of Tehri, and a new Tehri town was developed nearby to house displaced residents.

Today, New Tehri stands as a symbol of resilience, blending historical roots with modern progress. The surrounding region, with its pristine lakes, temples, and mountain views, continues to attract visitors seeking both peace and adventure. Tehri’s story is one of survival, transformation, and an enduring spirit that reflects the soul of Uttarakhand.
