The Chardham Yatra — covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is one of the most demanding pilgrimages in India. The terrain is rugged, the altitude is punishing, and supplies on the route are limited. Packing right can make or break your yatra.
This guide gives you a practical, experience-backed packing list — and an equally important list of what to leave at home.
1. Clothing
The Himalayas can swing from 20°C afternoons to near-freezing nights. Layer up — and avoid denim, which gets heavy when wet.
Warm Layers
- 3–4 sets of thermal innerwear (top & bottom)
- 2 fleece or woollen sweaters
- 1 heavy winter jacket or parka
- 1 lightweight down jacket (essential for Kedarnath & Badrinath)
- Woollen socks — 4 to 5 pairs
- Woollen gloves and a warm cap or balaclava
Base Clothing
- 3–4 lightweight cotton kurtas or T-shirts
- 2–3 comfortable trousers or salwar kameez
- 1 light stole or shawl for temple entry
- Enough innerwear for the full trip
Rain & Trek Gear
- 1 waterproof rain jacket or poncho (not an umbrella — wind makes them useless)
- 1 pair waterproof trekking trousers
- 1 pair ankle-height trekking shoes — worn-in before the trip
- 1 pair sandals or flip-flops for temple premises
- Waterproof bag cover
2. Footwear
The Kedarnath trek is 16 km round trip. Your footwear is the single most important gear decision you’ll make.
- Trekking shoes: Ankle-high, waterproof, with good grip. Must be broken in before you travel — never wear new shoes on the trek.
- Sandals or flip-flops: For temple premises where shoes must be removed.
- Thick socks: Neoprene or woollen to prevent blisters and cold feet.
3. Medicine & First Aid
Medical facilities are sparse on the Chardham route. A personal kit is non-negotiable, especially at altitude.
Essential Medicines
- Diamox (Acetazolamide) — altitude sickness prevention
- Paracetamol / Ibuprofen — fever, headache, pain
- ORS sachets — for dehydration
- Antacids — Gelusil or Digene
- Anti-diarrheal tablets
- Cough and cold medication
- All personal prescription medicines — carry a 30-day supply
First Aid Supplies
- Adhesive bandages and blister patches
- Antiseptic cream (Betadine or Savlon)
- Crepe bandage and surgical tape
- Muscle relief spray — Moov or Volini
- Digital thermometer
- Pulse oximeter — critical for detecting altitude sickness (AMS)
- Knee support brace — especially for seniors
4. Documents & ID
Biometric registration has been mandatory since 2019. Without your registration card, entry to certain dhams may be refused.
| Document | Why You Need It | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar / Voter ID / Passport | Required at all checkpoints | Must Have |
| Chardham Yatra Registration Card | Biometric registration — checked at entry points | Must Have |
| Accommodation booking confirmation | Verified at checkpoints | Must Have |
| Medical fitness certificate | Required for pilgrims over 60 at Kedarnath | Recommended |
| Travel insurance documents | Covers medical emergencies and helicopter evacuation | Recommended |
| Emergency contact card (laminated) | In case of medical emergency on the trek | Recommended |
5. Daily Essentials & Toiletries
Travel-size only. Full bottles are dead weight at altitude.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV is intense at high altitude
- Lip balm with SPF
- Moisturising lotion — skin dries fast in mountain air
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss
- Biodegradable soap and shampoo
- Hand sanitiser (small bottle)
- Toilet paper or tissues — many temples don’t provide paper
- Quick-dry microfibre towel
- Trekking / walking stick — also available to rent on route
- Headlamp + spare batteries
- Reusable water bottle — 1.5 to 2 litres
- Water purification tablets
- Energy bars, dry fruits, and trail mix
- UV-protection sunglasses
- Power bank (10,000+ mAh)
- BSNL or Jio SIM — best coverage in Uttarakhand hills
6. Food to Carry
Langars and small dhabas are available throughout the route. You don’t need to carry meals — just high-energy snacks for trek days.
- Dry fruits and mixed nuts — almonds, raisins, cashews
- Energy bars and chikki
- Glucose powder or electrolyte sachets
- Biscuits, instant porridge, or poha packets
7. Dham-by-Dham Notes
⛰ Yamunotri (3,293m) — 6 km trek from Janki Chatti. Carry small cloth bags for the prasad ritual (cooking rice in the Surya Kund hot springs). Rain protection essential.
🌊 Gangotri (3,100m) — Largely road-accessible. Cold nights — carry an extra layer or sleeping bag liner if staying overnight.
🏔 Kedarnath (3,583m) — The hardest leg. 16 km round trek. Full trekking gear required. Pony, palki, and helicopter options available. Pulse oximeter strongly advised.
🌸 Badrinath (3,100m) — Road-accessible by vehicle. Most comfortable of the four dhams. Still very cold in the evenings — don’t skip the warm layers.
8. What to Leave Behind
Every unnecessary item is weight your body carries at 3,500 metres. Be ruthless.
Strictly Prohibited
- Leather goods of any kind
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Non-vegetarian food
- Plastic bags — banned in Uttarakhand hill areas
Impractical / Too Heavy
- Suitcases and hard-shell luggage
- Laptops or heavy electronics
- Jewellery and valuables
- Full-size toiletry bottles
- More than two pairs of shoes
- Umbrellas — use a poncho instead
- Formal or office clothing
- Hair dryer or electric styling tools
9. Which Bag to Use
Use a 40–50 litre backpack with a hip belt. The hip belt transfers weight off your shoulders — essential on the Kedarnath trek. Bring a smaller 15–20 litre daypack for temple visits. Leave suitcases behind entirely.
Target total weight: under 10–12 kg. Every extra kilogram matters at 3,500 metres.
Frequently Asked Questions
One 40–50L backpack and a 15–20L daypack. No suitcases. Keep total weight under 10–12 kg. During the Kedarnath trek your main bag stays at your accommodation in Sonprayag or Gaurikund.
Highly recommended for Kedarnath (16 km) and Yamunotri (6 km). Sticks reduce knee strain by up to 30% on descents. You can rent bamboo sticks at base camps if you prefer not to carry your own.
A medical fitness certificate, pulse oximeter, Diamox (doctor-prescribed), knee brace, and all cardiac or BP medications. Consider the pony, palki, or helicopter option for Kedarnath.
Basic woolens, ponchos, trekking sticks, and snacks are available at Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, and Sonprayag. Quality varies and prices are higher than in cities — come prepared from home.
Yes. Even in June, Kedarnath nights drop to 2–5°C and occasionally below zero. Badrinath evenings sit around 8–12°C. Warm clothing is non-negotiable even in peak season.
Not mandatory but strongly recommended. Helicopter evacuation from Kedarnath costs ₹5,000–₹12,000+ without insurance.
Register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or at offline centres in Haridwar and Rishikesh. Registration is free and the card is checked at multiple points on the route.
